Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

Heel pain can be more than an annoyance. It can completely disrupt your lifestyle. That first step out of bed shouldn’t be met with pain. Walking, running, exercising or simply standing for extended periods can become challenges when you suffer from Plantar Fasciitis. At Club Five Health, we offer advanced non-surgical plantar fasciitis treatment with locations in Green Bay, WI, Warminster, PA and Fairless Hills, PA. If you have pain in your heel or arch, our team can help. We’re here to get you back doing what you love.

Plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue located along the soles of your feet that connects your heel bone (calcaneus) to your toes. It is like a strong string supporting and cushioning your foot’s arch while absorbing shock as you walk or run.

Plantar Fasciitis occurs when the band becomes inflamed or irritated as a result of excessive strain or stress. It is typically at its worst during activities such as running. The inflammation is caused by your body’s defense system, which leads to sharp and stabbing pain.

  • The first few steps after waking up.
  • After long periods of standing or sitting.
  • Following exercise, not usually during it.

While the exact cause can vary, common contributing factors include:

  • Foot Mechanics: Flat feet, high arches, or an abnormal walking pattern cause the feet to distribute weight unevenly, placing additional stress on the plantar fascia.
  • Overuse: Sudden increases in activity level, such as long-distance running, or prolonged standin,g can stress the band.
  • Improper Footwear: Shoes lacking support or cushioning to protect the plantar fascia.
  • Weight: Excess body weight increases the load on your feet.
  • Tight Muscles: Tight calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) or Achilles tendons can pull on the heel bone, increasing tension in the plantar fascia.

Traditional approaches often focus solely on temporary pain relief with rest, ice packs or basic stretching, which can be useful. But it fails to address chronic inflammation, tissue degeneration (fasciosis) or biomechanical factors that cause the pain.

Club Five Health's Approach to Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

We address Plantar Fasciitis by directly targeting the plantar fascia band for lasting and effective results. From deep tissue regeneration and correcting dysfunctionalities, to personalized treatments tailored. All treatment plans start off with an in-depth consultation to understand your condition history, goals and desired outcomes.

Here are the treatments we use to treat Plantar Fasciitis:

Tecar Therapy

  • What it is: Tecar Therapy is a physiotherapy modality that uses non-ionizing radiofrequency currents to stimulate the body’s natural repair mechanisms. It offers two modes: Capacitive (targeting superficial, fluid-rich tissues such as muscle and skin) and Resistive (for deeper, denser tissues, including tendons and ligaments like the plantar fascia).
  • How it works for Plantar Fasciitis: Tecar creates controlled deep warmth within targeted tissues without excessive surface heating. Creating internal bio-stimulation which improves local blood circulation, enhances oxygen delivery to damaged cells, and facilitates metabolic waste removal. It also stimulates cellular metabolism, which assists fibroblast cells (cells responsible for producing collagen-based connective tissues such as plantar fascia) to work more effectively at repairing microtears while decreasing inflammation.  Promoting nonthermal bio-stimulation that encourages healing processes without heat.
  • Benefits: Reduced pain and inflammation, accelerated tissue regeneration, improved circulation, increased tissue elasticity, and faster recovery times. These benefits all combine to create an experience that many describe as pleasant yet warm.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

  • What it is: IASTM involves using tools designed to treat fascial restrictions, scar tissue and adhesions within soft tissues.
  • How it works for Plantar Fasciitis: Over time, chronic inflammation in the plantar fascia may result in scar tissue or adhesion, areas where tissues become dense, restrictive and less flexible. This restricts normal movement while causing pain. This scarring process could slow the recovery process. IASTM tools enable therapists to locate these problematic areas and apply controlled micro-trauma. This process works to break down scar tissue while initiating an inflammatory response which stimulates healing and encourages your body to absorb excess scar tissue while producing new healthy collagen fibers. This aims to restore flexibility and function within both the plantar fascia as well as surrounding muscles (such as your calves).
  • Benefits: Reduced pain, breakdown of scar tissue and adhesions, increased tissue flexibility and range of motion, enhanced blood flow to the treated area and quicker recovery times are just a few benefits of this treatment. This solution effectively addresses inflamed tissue seen with Plantar Fasciitis.

Shockwave Therapy (Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy – ESWT)

  • What it is: Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic pressure waves delivered directly into an affected area, without electrical shocks. Shockwave is particularly beneficial for chronic tendon or fascia issues which have not responded positively to other forms of conservative treatments, such as physical therapy and medication.
  • How it works for Plantar Fasciitis: This mechanism is complex. Shockwaves create controlled micro-trauma in degenerated plantar fascia tissue. This activates your body’s healing processes through:
    • Increasing Blood Flow (Neovascularization): Promoting the growth of new blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients for recovery.
    • Stimulating Growth Factors: Releasing cell messengers that aid tissue regeneration and repair.
    • Reducing Pain Signals: Creating an analgesic effect through overstimulating nerve endings and potentially blocking pain transmission (Gate Control Theory).
    • Breaking Down Calcifications: Helping dissolve calcium deposits that form within the fascia in cases of plantar fasciitis.
    • Inflammation: Reduce inflammation.
  • Benefits: This plantar fasciitis treatment helps with pain reduction, promotes tissue regeneration, breakdown of calcium deposits, and enhances blood supply. Some mild discomfort may be experienced during the treatment and sessions are short.

Class 4 Laser Therapy

  • What it is: Class 4 Laser Therapy, also referred to as High-Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT), employs specific wavelengths of photon energy that penetrate deep tissues without creating thermal damage. Unlike lower-class lasers, this delivers a higher amount of energy deeper and faster, thus making it an effective treatment for Plantar Fasciitis.
  • How it works for Plantar Fasciitis: Photobiomodulation involves applying laser energy directly onto cells within the plantar fascia and surrounding tissues, stimulating them to respond with beneficial physiological effects. Laser therapy increases mitochondrial activity (the powerhouses of cells), leading to greater production of ATP energy for repair processes. The end goal is to aid natural repair mechanisms within your body. Laser therapy assists by:
    • Reduce Pain: By decreasing nerve sensitivity and stimulating endorphin release (natural painkillers).
    • Reduce Inflammation: Decrease inflammation and swelling.
    • Accelerate Tissue Repair: Stimulate fibroblast activity and collagen production to repair micro-tears.
    • Improve Circulation: Temporary widening of blood vessels.
  • Benefits: Non-invasive pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, accelerated healing and tissue regeneration, improved circulation, and reduced muscle tightness. The treatment itself is pain-free, with a gentle warming sensation.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

  • What it is: PRP Therapy is a regenerative treatment that uses your blood to promote healing. A small sample is taken and processed through a centrifuge to isolate platelets. These cells are rich in growth factors and proteins essential for tissue repair and regeneration. These concentrated cells are then injected into the damaged plantar fascia.
  • How it works for Plantar Fasciitis: The plantar fascia suffers from poor blood supply, which slows natural healing. By injecting high concentrations of platelets directly into injured sites, we deliver growth factors (PDGF, TGF-b, VEGF and EGF) directly where needed, promoting cellular healing by:
    • Attracting Stem Cells: Promoting the body’s repair cells to the site of injury.
    • Stimulating Cell Proliferation: Encouraging the growth of new, healthy tissue.
    • Promoting Collagen Synthesis: Facilitating the rebuilding of the fascial structure.
    • Enhancing Angiogenesis: Supporting the development of new blood vessels.
  • Benefits: This plantar fasciitis treatment promotes natural, long-term healing. By using your blood, it reduces rejection or allergy risks, targeting the degenerative nature of chronic Plantar Fasciitis (fasciosis), providing pain relief, and functional improvements.
