What Is Red Light Therapy?

Healing of the skin, muscles, and other tissues can be aided by red light therapy (RLT). It puts you in contact with low levels of red or NIR light. Light in the infrared spectrum is invisible to the human eye but can be felt as heat. Red light is very much like infrared, yet it is visible to the human eye.
Photobiomodulation (PBM), low-level laser treatment (LLLT), and low-power laser therapy (LPLT) are various names for the same thing: red light therapy.

A More Technical Note

Only a tiny portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, between 390 and 750 nanometers (nm), is visible to the human eye.
Red light, with its relatively low energy, can be seen between 625 and 750 nm within the visible spectrum. Infrared light exists beyond the visible light spectrum, towards the red end of the spectrum. It’s invisible, but humans can sense it as heat. The wavelengths of near-, mid-, and far-infrared (750 nm to 1 mm) light make up infrared radiation. However, the most beneficial wavelength range is near-infrared (750-1200nm), which is most similar to the red spectrum.
It appears that between 630 and 680 nm and 800 and 880 nm, the “therapeutic window” for light is most effective when used in red light treatment.
It uses efficient LED bulbs to provide the body with low-energy light waves in the red and near-infrared (NIR) spectrum. The biological benefits of red and NIR light are identical, and the two forms of light work together to penetrate the skin by an additional 5–10 millimeters. Longer-wavelength NIR light reaches deeper structures including nerves, muscles, tendons, and bone, while shorter-wavelength red light waves are absorbed by the skin’s outermost layers.

Benefits

After learning about the mechanism of the therapy, the first thing that may come to your mind is why you should invest in it. Here are some tops areas that our clients benefit from this magical therapy.

Pain and Inflammation

In Red light therapy, the infrared light can pass through the skin unimpeded. Infrared light has been shown to increase mitochondrial activity. The mitochondria are responsible for healing stimulation and protein/collagen production.
Recent studies have indicated that this treatment method can be effective in lowering inflammation levels. Red light therapy dramatically reduced inflammatory-related neuropathic pain in a triple-blind investigation of rats.

Skin Conditions

In addition to being extremely uncomfortable, common skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis can be quite challenging to cure.
These unsightly disorders are treatable with red light therapy, which reduces inflammation of the skin and accelerates the healing process. Due to its efficacy and relative safety, it is rapidly gaining popularity as the therapy of choice.
Two sessions of 20 minutes of red light therapy showed a 60-100% improvement in psoriasis in a trial of treatment-resistant cases published in 2010.

Healing

Red light therapy is helpful for wounds that are taking too long to heal after surgery or an injury.
By increasing blood flow, more oxygen and healing nutrients will be delivered to the injured area faster. It decreases inflammation, promotes new blood vessels and tissue growth, and increases collagen production.
Red light treatment was reported to decrease pain and hemorrhage and speed up wound healing in individuals recuperating from heart surgery in a 2014 study.

Arthritis

Patients experiencing pain from inflammatory disorders, such as knee osteoarthritis (OA), can benefit greatly from this assistance with inflammation. Low-intensity light treatment (LILT) and high-intensity light therapy (HILT) were found to have similar benefits on pain and function when used in conjunction with exercise in a recent study.
